Head of Backend Development, Parallax
October 2016 - Present
After my first year at Parallax I was promoted to Head of Backend Development. This involved overseeing all the other developers within my department and leading the way for processes on how the development flow should work. With the increased responsibility I have been more involved in multiple projects and taking on some of the project management.
During my time as Head of Backend I have been involved in all the recruitment, hiring decisions, progression reviews, disciplinaries as well as bi-weekly 1-to-1 meetings with all members of my team.
Over the 4 years the team has expanded to a team of 9 developers. With this expansion it required more management time to be involved in all the different projects going on throughout the department. This also involved creating processes to unify the way of working across multiple developers. I have still been very hands on with a split of 70% coding, 30% management.
I have also hired a few junior developers and helped mentor them to expand their knowledge and progress up to middle weight developers and in a position they can handle entire projects independently.
For my development role I have been the primary developer of a project called Ki. that uses LoRaWAN to connect street lights and other IoT devices to the internet. I have been working on it since day 1 in November 2016 (https://parall.ax/work/lucy-zodion). The system is built in Laravel and involved creating a massive set of APIs that integrates with network providers directly to allow the transmission of data both ways. Throughout this project I have had to travel to London and Valencia multiple times to gain certification on the clients behalf for the product. The certifications are for TALQ, which is a standardised IoT protocol among manufacturers throughout Europe and to gain UMSUG certification which is how the UK handles public domain electricity usage and billing.
Web Developer, Parallax
October 2015 - October 2016
As a Backend developer at Parallax I have worked on a huge variety of projects. Most are built on custom CMS called expose and primarily all built in PHP. When I joined Parallax it had began to move towards the use of Laravel and I took on the responsibility of producing the next version of expose to work within Laravel. Before working at Parallax I had not used Laravel before, so it was a big learning curve. But with the help of Laracasts and the extensive documentation on the Laravel site, I was able to pick it up in just a few weeks. Now I know the Laravel documentation of by heart!
Web Developer, LITTLE
May 2014 - October 2015
This position gave me much more responsibility and flexibility to be involved in some large scale projects that helped shape the direction the web side of the business will go in the future. I worked with multi APIs whilst at LITTLE and was responsible for the creation of an in house CMS platform that was built on a custom framework. This was followed on from my university project and extensive research in all the different components of what makes a good framework.
Web Developer, Rejuvenate
March 2012 - August 2013
Rejuvenate Productions is a web development company based in Leeds. Whilst working I was part of a team of developers that I assisted in completing a variety of tasks. Throughout my time I gained the majority of my technical skills listed above. This company allowed me to expand my knowledge by offering great on the job training throughout my placement year and then allowed me to carry on after I had completed the full year.
BSc Computing, Leeds Metropolitan University
2010 - 2014
Whilst at University I covered a wide ranges of areas. The course mainly looks at programming and is a practical approach to everything, which I think is great. Over the course I studied System Modeling, Java Software Development, Database Development, Web Development, Networking and Communications and Group Projects. Through studying these subjects I learnt what my passion is in life, and that is web development. Before coming to University I thought I wanted to be a System Analysis, but after 1 module in that I realised it was not for me and started to look at other areas of IT.
As part of my course I took a 1 year placement with a company called Rejuvenate Productions. This company was amazing to work for and allowed me to grow massively. When I first started I didn't know anything about Object Orientated Programming, but by the end I was able to write my own classes to do almost anything.
